Retrofitting has become increasingly popular.

Retrofit projects offer a means of upgrading existing buildings to improve energy efficiency, sustainability and overall performance. However, it is important to understand and mitigate the inherent risks involved in such projects.

There are various risks inherent in retrofit projects, including technical challenges, financial uncertainties, and legal considerations. Retrofit projects need thorough planning, assessment and risk management throughout the entire retrofitting process to minimise potential setbacks and promote project success.

At 2CT we can offer a wide range of services to support you in the delivery of your Retrofit Scheme.

PAS2035 works on the following stages:

  • Assess the existing property and ensure any outstanding maintenance of structural issues are rectified.
  • Fabric-first approach ensures your building envelope is designed to be thermally efficient including the walls, roof, and floors. All interface junctions and building elements will be considered to provide a thermally balanced envelope, reducing cold bridging and thermal failures.
  • As part of the fabric-first approach the air tightness and moisture management through the exterior construction build up will be carefully designed.
  • Ventilation strategies unique to the building will be considered and implemented to ensure the air quality of the building is improved and maintained with the adoption of new measures.
  • Quick wins – Introduce energy efficient controls, LED lighting systems etc, to help occupants manage energy use.
  • Lastly, introducing renewable energy solutions to further reduce the reliance on fossil fuel energy, and help to reduce carbon emissions.

PAS2035 sets out a framework to successfully plan, deliver and improve the efficiency of our old housing stock. It’s important to remember the old approach of a single measure, quick wins may seem efficient at the time, however, history shows this is generally not the case. A single measure installed without a combined plan may have a negative impact on the building and the occupants in the long term. It is vital we adopt the whole house fabric first approach if we are to meet the obligations set out by the UK government.
